Aptitude tests at the Music High School Schloss Belvedere for the 2024/25 school year

The education at the Music High Schloss School Belvedere, the centre for gifted students at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, enjoys an excellent reputation. Instrumental and vocal lessons are taught by professors and lecturers from the university.

The music grammar school is now organising its aptitude tests for future years 5 to 11 again. Applicants for the 2024/25 school year are cordially invited to the Music High School on Friday, 8 March for an audition, examination and interview.

Pupils in grades 4 to 10 who are already successfully learning an instrument and can prove their aptitude for grammar school can apply for the aptitude test. There are generally better chances of applying for admission to the lower grades.

In addition, the following instruments are particularly sought after: Accordion, bassoon, tuba, viola, violoncello, double bass and percussion. Applications for the aptitude tests are possible until 1 March.

The aptitude test consists of three parts: Firstly, an audition on the instrument; secondly, a test of general musicality and musical thinking skills in the areas of music theory and ear training; and thirdly, an interview about family, school and boarding school.

There are opportunities to present on all orchestral instruments, piano, organ, accordion, recorder, guitar, classical singing (after the voice change) or composition.

For the audition, a programme of approx. 15 minutes is requested, which should consist of two pieces of different character or different eras and a technical part. The technical part includes, for example, scales, triads, chords in different articulations, possibly also an etude. The audition part should not include any pop pieces and can be extended by the examination board to include short rehearsal lessons or a sight-reading exercise.

The examination of general musicality means forming, singing and recognising intervals and triads by ear, re-singing, continuation and sight-reading exercises with melodies and rhythms as well as checking music theory knowledge.

Finally, the applicant interview offers the opportunity to ask questions about the documents submitted. It serves to round off the impression of personality made in the other parts of the examination.

The Music High School Schloss Belvedere is a special state grammar school with boarding facilities for up to 120 students from year 5 onwards. The programme intensively promotes solo, chamber music and orchestral experience through a variety of performance opportunities.

Among the pupils, who come from Germany and abroad and sit on the first rostrum of the state youth orchestras as well as the national selection orchestras, are numerous prizewinners of national and international competitions. Many alumni of the Musikgymnasium now play in leading national and international orchestras. The Musikgymnasium is also involved as a UNESCO project school.
