The 14th Lied Festival with concerts and a public masterclass
In a packed week, the 14th edition of the "Liedtage" at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar presents a varied programme from 13 to 18 February. Students from the Lied classes will sing and perform. The programme kicks off on Tuesday, 13 February at 7:30 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus with an evening commemorating Peter Cornelius on the 200th anniversary of his birth and 150th anniversary of his death.
This important composer from Franz Liszt's circle will perform original songs and vocal ensembles as well as the overture to the opera "The Barber of Baghdad" arranged for two pianos, the premiere of which Franz Liszt himself once conducted in Weimar. The concert will be presented by Dr Christoph Meixner, Archive Director and President of the Thuringian State Music Council.
The subsequent lecture-recital on Wednesday, 14 February at 7:30 p.m. in the Salon Fürstenhaus (room 108) also has a connection to Weimar. Prof Karl-Peter Kammerlander will talk about Franz Schubert's preoccupation with Goethe's poems, among other things. "The history of the romantic German piano song began right here," says Prof Kammerlander, artistic director of the Lied Festival. In the recital, baritone Mikhail Verkhoglyadov and pianist Sofiia Mushtai will juxtapose Schubert songs with Goethe settings by other composers.
Once again, the Weimar University of Music is also welcoming a high-calibre guest: Prof. Richard Stokes from the Royal Academy of Music in London will be giving a masterclass from 14 to 16 February from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Salon Fürstenhaus (room 108), in which the participating students and the audience will be able to learn a great deal about the background, texts, music and performance. "He is quite simply one of the most important song experts in Europe," says Prof Karl-Peter Kammerlander.
Prof. Richard Stokes will also host the concert of the English song class on Friday, 16 February at 7:30 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus. The final concert of the semester under the direction of Prof. Thomas Steinhöfel is dedicated to compositions by Roger Quilter, Aaron Copland and Edward Elgar, among others, which are rather unknown in this country and are characterised by a sensual aesthetic.
The 14th Liedtage will conclude with a "song mosaic" on Sunday, 18 February at 7:30 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus. Songs by Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann and Richard Strauss, among others, will be performed. The concert will be presented by Prof Thomas Steinhöfel.
