Study school music in Weimar
Open house in January invites visitors to observe classes and talk with teachers
The school music program in Weimar offers a diverse and flexible education in a wonderful atmosphere, providing the best possible preparation for teaching music in secondary schools. Anyone interested in studying can now see for themselves: The Department of Music Education and Church Music will open the doors of the university building Am Palais (Am Palais 4 in Weimar) on Saturday, January 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
After a musical welcome at 10:00 a.m., visitors can explore the various aspects of studying school music through observation and trial lessons. Prof. Juan M.V. Garcia will give a musical insight into choir and ensemble conducting, Prof. Lena Haselmann-Kränzle will explain vocal training in the classical and/or pop genres, and Prof. Gero Schmidt-Oberländer will illustrate the core subject of practical piano playing in schools, known as “Schupra” for short.
Participants will also have the opportunity to talk to student representatives. Since the vivid insights into the program are spread over four recurring blocks, there will be plenty of time until 5:00 p.m. to get a taste of some or even all of the areas.
The visits will be complemented by a keynotelecture on school music studies by Jonas Brehm starting at 2:00 p.m., as well as general study counseling by the “Academic and Student Affairs” department and Institute Director Prof. Dr. Anna Wolf.
The idyllic monastery building Am Palais is dedicated entirely to school musicians and church musicians. This provides excellent practice facilities for students, including a dedicated concert hall, various ensemble and band rooms, two seminar rooms with brand-new digital equipment, and a student lounge.
