Masterful concerts
The 65th Weimar Master Classes conclude their first week with high-calibre performances
It's all go at the Weimar Music University: five of the nine international ‘Weimar Master Classes’ (19 July – 2 August) are already taking place in parallel at the Fürstenhaus and the Hochschulzentrum am Horn.
Guest professors Michail Lifits (piano), Ingolf Turban (violin), Barbara Westphal (viola), Alexey Stadler (cello) and Jean-Louis Capezzali (oboe) are currently teaching.
The popular orchestra studio with the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, a unique feature of these traditional master classes, has also begun: on Thursday afternoon, Barbara Westphal's viola course rehearses in the seminar building of the Weimarhalle, followed by Jean-Louis Capezzali's oboe course on Friday afternoon.
Day tickets for passive participation as guest listeners in all courses and the orchestra studio can be purchased at the Weimar Master Classes office in the Fürstenhaus.
Before guest professor Konstantin Scherbakov begins his course, the renowned pianist will present himself to the public as a ‘master in concert’ on Saturday, 26 July at 7:30 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus.
The programme includes Johann Sebastian Bach's famous Chaconne in Ferruccio Busoni's arrangement, a late Schubert sonata in C minor with dramatic contrasts and lyrical intensity, and a round of immortal Chopin melodies. The programme includes the folkloric elegance of the mazurkas, the majestic A flat major ballade with its epic narrative power, dreamy nocturnes and three light and airy waltzes.
Beforehand, participants will present the results of their intensive course work. On Thursday, 24 July at 7:30 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus, the students of Michail Lifits' piano course will perform, and on Friday, 25 July at 4:00 p.m. in the Forum Seebach, the participants of Barbara Westphal's viola course will perform.
Finally, everyone is cordially invited to a joint concert of all five current master classes entitled ‘Meisterhaft I’ on Friday evening, 25 July at 7:30 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus.
Tickets for all concerts are available at the Weimar Tourist Information Office and at the box office on the day of the concert.
