Masterclass in conducting with Prof Daniele Agiman on Rossini's opera ‘Il barbiere di Siviglia’

Every semester, the departments of the Weimar Music University welcome the opportunity to learn from other institutions internationally as a welcome addition to the curriculum. From 9 to 11 April, the Department of Conducting and Opera Répétiteur Studies welcomes Prof. Daniele Agiman from the renowned Conservatorio di Milano in Italy.

Together with Weimar's Professor of Conducting, Ekhart Wycik, he will lead a three-day master class for the opera ‘Il barbiere di Siviglia’ (‘The Barber of Seville’) by Gioacchino Rossini for the students of the ‘Weimar Conducting Forge’.

After two days of preparation in Weimar, the participating students and teachers will move to the Landestheater Coburg, where the ensemble rehearsals with singers and the local orchestra will take place. The aim and conclusion of the course is a public performance by the prizewinners of Rossini's opera ‘Il barbiere di Siviglia’ on Friday, 11 April at 7:30 pm in the Globe Coburg, conducted by one or two conducting students selected during the workshop.

Prof. Daniele Agiman is considered one of the most experienced and internationally active Italian conductors. He has conducted orchestras throughout Italy and in many European countries, in Japan, South Korea, South America and South Africa, and is artistic director and advisor to numerous institutions in the festival and opera sectors.

His Weimar master class is a return visit to a master class on German opera repertoire given by Prof. Ekhart Wycik at the conservatory in Milan in February as part of the Erasmus+ exchange programme.

The Weimar conducting programme is known for its cooperation with numerous professional orchestras and theatres. In addition to the Landestheater Coburg, these include the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau, the Jena Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Weimar and the Thüringen Philharmonie Gotha-Eisenach, as well as several orchestras in the Czech Republic.

The exceptionally high proportion of practical training is considered one of the success factors of the ‘Weimar conductor's forge’: its students and alumni regularly rank among the winners of national and international conducting competitions and have achieved top positions in orchestras, theatres and choirs in Germany and abroad.
