Farewell after 50 years
Voice professor Gudrun Fischer ends her teaching career at the Beethovenhaus Belvedere
On the occasion of her 50th anniversary and the definitive end of her teaching career at “her” university, voice professor Gudrun Fischer will be given a ceremonial farewell. The Department of Vocal Studies | Music Theater at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar is organizing a festive hour in her honor—and as a thank you—on Wednesday, October 22, at 12:00 p.m. in the Jenny Fleischer Alt Hall, with greetings and lots of music.
“Although she has long been retired – for 22 years – Prof. Gudrun Fischer still supervised her last graduate in the summer semester of 2025. This marks the end of an extremely successful teaching career,” says the director of the Department of Voice | Music Theater, Prof. Christoph Ritter.
“Countless young singers have passed through her school and benefited from her invaluable experience. Gudrun Fischer has had a decisive influence on the fortunes of the institute over all these years.”
As part of the internal ceremony at the Beethovenhaus Belvedere, songs by Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert will be performed. Eunhyuk Lee, accompanied by Won Choi on the piano, will also sing the song “Dunkelrote Rosen” (Dark Red Roses) from Carl Millöcker's operetta “Gasparone.” The teachers of the Institute for Singing | Music Theater will also perform a “Canon for Three Voices” penned by Walther von Goethe.
More than 60 years ago, Gudrun Fischer began studying singing at the Weimar University of Music. A year earlier, in 1956, the university had been honored with Franz Liszt as its namesake. Gudrun Fischer successfully completed her studies after six years, then returned to her alma mater in 1974 with a teaching position. In 1986, she became a lecturer at the university, and in 1989 she was appointed professor of singing.
In the decades before that, she enjoyed success as an opera singer at major venues such as the German National Theater in Weimar, the Dresden State Opera, and the Berlin State Opera. Although long since retired, Gudrun Fischer continued to teach her own singing class until recently. For 25 years, she has also been involved in the board of the Weimar University of Music's support association.
