From the Baroque to the present

Silke Evers-Osthoff becomes new professor of singing in Weimar

The Department of Voice | Music Theatre at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar has gained a renowned singer and experienced teacher. The lyric soprano Silke Evers-Osthoff will take up the professorship for singing with a focus on baroque music and contemporary vocal music as well as vocal pedagogy on 1 April 2024. "The Department of Voice | Music Theatre is delighted to have such a distinguished and committed new colleague in its ranks," says Professor Christoph Ritter, Director of the Department.

"For me, Weimar is the heartland of the artists, poets and thinkers of the 19th century," explains Silke Evers-Osthoff, who received her certificate of appointment from the hands of University President Prof. Anne Kathrin-Lindig today, Thursday 21 March. "I am looking forward to training young singers to become artistic personalities in the princely rooms of the Belvedere."

The new professor will benefit from her many years of experience as an opera, lieder and oratorio singer. "A trusting relationship and intensive dialogue within the faculty is very important to me."

Now more than ever, singers need a wide-ranging repertoire in order to survive on the music market. "In addition to mainstream music, I also want to inspire them with baroque music and contemporary music, which is particularly close to my heart. I also think it's particularly important that students learn to pass on their experience in a pedagogically sound way as well as singing themselves. I will play a key role in the development of new study formats," says the new Weimar voice professor.

The lyric soprano Silke Evers-Osthoff has been a permanent member of the ensemble at the Mainfrankentheater Würzburg since 2003, where she has excelled in a variety of roles such as Mozart's Donna Anna, Fiordiligi and Ilia, as well as Michaela (Carmen), Tatjana (Eugene Onegin) and Hanna Glawari (The Merry Widow), including leading roles in world premieres. In the meantime, she has made guest appearances at various opera houses such as Bonn, Münster, Meiningen, Kassel, Augsburg and Chemnitz.

She has also sung at the Salzburg Festival and several times with great success at the Berlin State Opera. She has been honoured with many awards and can be heard in major concert halls such as the Berlin Philharmonie, the Berlin Konzerthaus, the Cologne Philharmonie and the Tonhalle Zurich.

Silke Evers-Osthoff is not only in demand as a stylistically confident interpreter of baroque music, but also in the field of new and contemporary music. She has performed with renowned ensembles and conductors such as Ingo Metzmacher, Roberto Spano and Peter Hirsch, the Ensemble Modern and the SWR Experimentalstudio Freiburg.

Her unusual Lied programmes, which she performs in moderated recitals and CD recordings, such as the CD with Mignon songs "Sehnsucht nach Italien" (Longing for Italy), also attract great attention. In addition to her stage career, Silke Evers-Osthoff has many years of teaching experience at the Music universities in Mainz and Würzburg as well as at international masterclasses in Cape Town and Siena, among others.
