Women composers in history and present

International Conference of the "Voices of Women" Project in Weimar

The new professor for singing and voice training at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, Prof. Dr. Lena Haselmann-Kränzle, has also brought a transnational ERASMUS+ education project with her to Weimar when she takes up her post in 2022. As part of the project called "Voices of Women" (VOW), there will now be master classes, workshops and lectures at the Weimar University of Music from June 21 to 23.

The speakers include Lena Haselmann-Kränzle (Weimar), Prof. Dr. Beatrix Borchard (Hamburg), Dr. Lilli Mittner (Tromsø), Prof. Dr. Janke Klok (Groningen/Berlin) and Prof. Bettina Smith (Stavanger).

On the theme of "Women Composers in History and the Present," the international conference will also host several interdisciplinary concerts with students and teachers from Stavanger and Tromsø (Norway), Groningen (Netherlands), and Weimar. On Thursday, June 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Saal Am Palais, vocal compositions by Francesca Caccini, Johanna Müller-Hermann, Rebecca Clarke, and Agathe Backer Grøndahl, among others, will be performed.

On the following Friday, June 23, at 4:00 p.m. in the Saal Am Palais, jazz vocal compositions by Tânia Maria and others are on the program, before the vocal ensemble "The Present" presents works by Hildegard Westerkamp, Chiara Margarita Cozzolani and Lucia Ronchetti, among others, at 7:30 p.m. in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus.

Admission to all concerts is free! Other conference program items include master classes in lied and jazz singing, so-called RESCAPE workshops, and a panel discussion.

Voices of Women (VOW) is a transnational educational project funded by the ERASMUS+ program. The project networks students and teachers to strengthen and secure the rightful place of women in historical, contemporary and future art production. VOW contributes to the EU's shared values of cultural awareness rooted in historical heritage, with women's works receiving their fair share of attention, analysis, interpretation and performance.

Project activities aim to perform and receive repertoire created by women composers in Europe with a focus on the 19th and 20th centuries. It also aims to train students to actively advocate for change and more frequent performance of this repertoire, including the development and provision of teaching materials based on art experiments. In addition, the goal is to create proposals for curriculum redesign and social change in arts education.

Another goal of VOW is to build a transnational network of artists, researchers, and actors who want to contribute to giving women their rightful place in the historical, contemporary, and future arenas of art production. As part of VOW, master classes will be held at the University of Stavanger in Norway at the same time as the conference in Weimar. Then, also in Norway, there will be master classes, digital training activities, and workshops at the Arctic University of Tromsø from November 20-24.

In spring 2024, Voices of Women will return to the Weimar University of Music for master classes and workshops, before a master class and the final conference of the VOW project at the University of Stavanger in Norway in November 2024.
