Concert tour to Córdoba

Chamber choir presents Haydn oratorio with Andalusian youth orchestra

The Chamber Choir of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar is currently embarking on a concert tour to Spain. From 14 to 18 March, the 45 singers from Weimar will be making a guest appearance in Córdoba. Together with the Andalusian youth orchestra "Orquesta Joven de Córdoba", they will perform two concerts with the Passion oratorio "The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross" by Joseph Haydn. The work is closely linked to Andalusia, as it was commissioned for the Capilla de la Santa Cueva in Cádiz (southern Spain).

The highlight of the trip is a concert in the world-famous mosque/cathedral "Mezquita" in Córdoba. This more than 1,000-year-old building has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984 and is an unrivalled example of beauty and peaceful interaction between world cultures and religions.

The Weimar Chamber Choir will be accompanied by four Weimar vocal students: Thora Müller (soprano), Dorothea Schmitt (alto), Felix Stöppler (tenor) and Maximilian Thom (baritone). David Fernandez Caravaca will be the conductor. He comes from Córdoba and has been studying orchestral conducting at the Weimar Music University for four years.

The chamber choir of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar includes students of school music, church music and conducting as well as students from the Bauhaus University Weimar, the University of Erfurt and the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. It was founded in 1926 as a supra-regional madrigal choir by Walter Rein and quickly developed into a top ensemble at the Music university.

The chamber choir primarily performs a cappella literature from the 16th to 21st centuries. The choir deliberately includes works by Thuringian and Saxon composers as well as world premieres. Vocal symphonic music is also an integral part of the repertoire: Bach's Passions, the Mass in B minor, the Christmas Oratorio, Mozart's Requiem, Bruckner's Mass in E minor, Brahms' Requiem and Liszt's Gran Mass are just a few examples.

Here, as in other projects, the choir has worked with renowned conductors, including Kurt Masur, Fabio Luisi, Max Pommer, Helmut Rilling, Georg Christoph Biller, Ton Koopman, Konrad Junghänel and John Butt. Concerts have been recorded by MDR, HR, BR and ORF and numerous CDs have been produced. In addition to its concert activities, the chamber choir is also committed to being a training centre for its own choral singing and conducting activities.
