Now in the Judaica Portal

More than 7,000 books, sheet music and musical pieces from Weimar related to Jewish culture

A total of 7,130 titles from the electronic catalogue of the library of the Weimar University of Music can now be found in an international discovery system of the Selma Stern Centre for Jewish Studies Berlin-Brandenburg.

As in 29 other libraries throughout Germany, librarians at the Weimar University of Music have marked catalogue records of those books, sheet music, essays or pieces on records and CDs that have a connection to Jewish culture. These have now been made available for the German Judaica portal of the Selma Stern Centre.

They can be found there alongside Judaica titles from the Berlin State Library, the Hamburg State and University Library, the European Centre for Jewish Music in Hanover and many smaller collections specialising in Jewish culture.

The Judaica Portal is a joint project of the Selma Stern Centre for Jewish Studies Berlin-Brandenburg and the Potsdam University Library in cooperation with the Cooperative Library Network Berlin-Brandenburg (KOBV) and the Fachverbund Judaica.

The University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar is thus the thirtieth institution to participate in this Judaica union catalogue. Jascha Nemtsov, Weimar professor for the history of Jewish music, is pleased that a new profile has now become visible in the Judaica portal, especially with the scores of Jewish classical composers. "I am very grateful to Ms Hofmann and her team for this important work, which benefits international research."

The head of the Weimar University of Music Library, Katharina Hofmann, is sure that the work of her colleagues has been worthwhile: "This way we can bring our collections to a wider audience. Perhaps we will receive more national loan requests as a result. We ourselves were amazed at how many sheet music, recordings and literature with a Jewish background are on our shelves."

At the moment, an extensive collection of books and sheet music by the collector Jürgen Gottschalk on Jewish culture, especially Jewish music and Jewish humour, is being catalogued in the Weimar University Library. The total of around 4,000 titles from this collection will then all be available on the Judaica portal as well.
