As in Heaven

Music Film Series of the "Weimar Master Classes" in cooperation with the Kommunales Kino mon ami

In addition to the public courses and concerts of the 63rd Weimar Master Classes (14-29 July) at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, the popular music film series is back again this year. A wide range of classics as well as current films will be shown from 18 to 26 July at 9 pm each night at the Kommunales Kino in the mon ami.

The series is preceded by the film "Wie im Himmel" directed by Kay Pollak (Sweden, 2004), which will already be shown on Monday, 17 July at 7:30 pm in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus. Tickets for this film at 7 euros, reduced rate 5 euros, are available at the Tourist Information Weimar and at the box office.

In the film "Like in Heaven", the world-famous conductor Daniel Dareus lives completely for music. When he collapses during one of his numerous performances, he reluctantly decides to give up his dream job. He retreats to his Swedish home village, but even here, music won't let him go. When he is asked to take over as cantor, Daniel can't say no, so from then on he leads an amateur church choir. Through his passion for music, the bitter Daniel finds his way back to people and also falls in love with the pretty Lena.

The series continues on Tuesday, 18 July at 9 pm in the mon ami cinema with the music and documentary film "Unsere Herzen, ein Klang" (Germany, 2022). The filmmakers Torsten Striegnitz and Simone Dobmeier have accompanied two choir directors and one choir leader as they turn a group of singing enthusiasts into choirs of rousing musical intensity.

The programme continues on Thursday, 20 July with the current US film "Tár" starring Cate Blanchett and Nina Hoss. In "Tár", three-time Oscar-winning director, writer and producer Todd Field tells the fictional story of Lydia Tár, the first female principal conductor of a major German orchestra.

The inspiring portrait "Igor Levit: No Fear!" (Germany, 2022) then follows pianist Igor Levit on Monday 24 July as he searches for the next challenge, observes him as he records new works, collaborates with conductors, orchestras and artists from around the world, immerses himself intensely in music and turns to his audience.

On the following day, 25 July, director Julian Benedikt turns the spotlight on "Blue Note - A Story of Modern Jazz" (USA / Germany, 1997). Since its founding in 1939, Blue Notes Records has been the epitome of jazz music. But hardly anyone knows that this label was founded by two German emigrants. It is the story of Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff, two German Jews from Berlin who emigrated to New York in 1939 and turned their love of jazz into a profession.

To conclude the music film series at Kino mon ami, the portrait "Ennio Morricone - The Maestro" will be shown on Wednesday, 26 July at 9 pm. It is a film like a symphony: Oscar winner Giuseppe Tornatore dedicates a monumental documentary to his friend and companion Ennio Morricone. He lets the legendary composer, who died shortly after the film was completed, look back on his incomparable life's work, which includes over 500 film compositions, in touching interviews.

Tickets for all music films in the mon ami cinema are available at the box office for 7 euros, concessions 5 euros.
