Elegance and passion

Collegium Musicum Weimar plays concerts with new conductor at Schießhaus and mon ami

Mauricio Sotelo-Romero has been the new conductor of the Collegium Musicum Weimar since the summer semester of 2023. The Spaniard took a particular liking to the orchestra when conducting with students from the conducting class of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar.

The first joint work phase now culminates in two end-of-semester concerts under the motto "Love * Elegance * Passion" on Thursday, June 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Schießhaus Weimar and on Saturday, July 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the youth and cultural center mon ami

The varied program includes the prelude to the opera "Tristan and Isolde" by Richard Wagner, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Oboe Concerto in C major, K. 314, and Jean Sibelius' 6th Symphony, whose premiere was conducted by the composer himself 100 years ago in Helsinki.

Yu-En Chen will present Mozart's Oboe Concerto as soloist. The 23-year-old Taiwanese has been studying at the Weimar Academy of Music in the oboe class of Prof. Matthias Bäcker since 2020 and is closely associated with the orchestra as a long-standing member.

Tickets for the concerts at 8 euros reduced 5 euros, are available in advance at the tourist information offices in Weimar, Erfurt and Jena, and also online via the website of the FRANZ LISZT SCHOOL of Music Weimar.

The Collegium Musicum Weimar, founded in 1994, grew out of the desire of students of school music to perform demanding symphonic works themselves in an orchestra. Prof. Michael Berg was the first conductor to lead the Collegium before it was placed in the hands of the students of the Department of Conducting and Opera Correpetition.

The Collegium was incorporated into the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar as an official university ensemble at the beginning of the winter semester 2018 and now consists largely of students of music education and musicology. The musical rehearsal work is enriched by students from the Bauhaus University Weimar, the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, the University of Erfurt and the Leipzig Conservatory as well as professional amateur musicians from all over Thuringia.

P. Mauricio Sotelo-Romero was born in San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Spain) and has been studying orchestral conducting in the class of Prof. Nicolás Pasquet and Prof. Ekhart Wycik at the Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT Weimar since 2019. Previously, he lived in Berlin, where he received his first conducting training with Alexander Gelovani, as well as lessons in violin, piano and harpsichord. He conducted his first concert at the age of 16 as part of a master class with Finnish conductor Jorma Panula.

Because of his fondness for opera, he has participated in new productions of operas such as "Tristan und Isolde" and "Lohengrin" in Brussels, Barcelona and Salzburg - learning from conductors such as Christian Thielemann and Josep Pons. In January 2022, he conducted his first own opera performance with "Così fan tutte" at the Landestheater Coburg. He has also gained much experience as a violinist in chamber music and orchestral playing, including as concertmaster of the Youth Ensemble for New Music Berlin in 2017 and 2018.
