Music and memories

Memorial service for former President Prof. Dr. Christoph Stölzl in the Weimar Schießhaus

The University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar bids farewell to its highly esteemed former president: On Saturday, 22 April at 2 p.m. in Weimar's Schießhaus, there will be a memorial service for Prof. Dr. Christoph Stölzl, who unexpectedly passed away in January 2023 after leading the university for twelve years.

In the programme, short speeches and memories of guests and companions will alternate with lots of music. There are only a few places left and admission is free; prior registration at reservierung(at)hfm-weimar.de is required.

In addition to University President Prof. Anne-Kathrin Lindig, speakers will include Thuringian Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow, the President of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, Ulrike Lorenz, the Chairman of the University Council, Arnulf Melzer, as well as professors and a student. The choice of music is based in part on a list of Christoph Stölzl's favourite pieces, which was submitted to the university.

The first part is quite classical: after a trumpet quartet by Giovanni Gabrieli, the chamber choir will perform Franz Liszt's "Kirchensegen" and "Nun ruhen alle Wälder" in an arrangement by Johann Sebastian Bach. The pianist and university professor Jascha Nemtsov will perform Gustav Lewin's "Caprice" as a soloist, while professors Anna Garzuly-Wahlgren (flute) and Claudia Buder (accordion) will perform a tango by Astor Piazzolla as a duo - and mezzo-soprano Luzia Ernst will sing Robert Schumann's "Widmung", accompanied on the piano by Prof. Thomas Steinhöfel.

The second half of the event features lighter music, including the song "The brightest of all lights", performed by the vocal ensembles "Katze im Sack" and "ensemble:". A quartet with vocals, accordion and guitar devotes itself to the music of the Comedian Harmonists and Django Reinhardt, before the memorial service with the "New Orleans Band" recalls Christoph Stölzl's love of guitar and banjo.
