World Wide Weimar

Interactive transcultural concert experience in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus

The University of Music celebrates the launch of its new strategy for internationalisation with "World Wide Weimar". The musical event begins on Wednesday, 12 April at 7:30 pm in the Festsaal Fürstenhaus. Embedded in music from all over the world, the university's internationalisation strategy will be presented.

The programme is not limited to the stage: musicians and listeners share the rows. In this way, sounds from the most diverse directions reach the ears - just as music and musicians come from everywhere. Admission is free

Part of the evening will be performed by the Aban Ensemble. The Persian women's collective consists of Mitra Behpoori, Sara Hasti and Nora Thiele. The musicians will play pieces from the Dastgah repertoire of Persian music on traditional instruments and add their own compositions and improvisations.

Shasha Zhu will play works on the GuQin, a fingerboard zither of classical Chinese music. Zhenyang Qian will perform pieces with her singing, whose lyrical texts originated over 1000 years ago in the Chinese Tang Dynasty.  This is followed by the performance of a modern piece by the Chinese composer Gang Chen by Haochen Qin on the sheng, a mouth organ, with piano accompaniment.

The evening will also include a concrete example of internationalisation in action: the piece "Days with Maodou" by Tianwei Zhu will be presented audiovisually in the form of a recording. It was created as part of a cooperation between the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar and the Manhattan School of Music in New York.

The structure of the programme is based on the four pillars of the newly developed internationalisation strategy: international student services, global networking as well as digitalisation and further and continuing education in an intercultural context.

Space is left for discussion in order to enter into conversation about potentials and challenges. For example, when it comes to digitalisation: the associated concept will be presented by the Vice President for Digitalisation and Internationalisation, Dr Jens Ewen

A practical example will be presented by Prof. Juan Garcia, who will let the audience take on the perspectives of a choir conductor in an entertaining way with his digital error choir. Prof. Dr. Tiago de Oliveira Pinto will introduce the audience to topics such as transcultural influences in music, intangible cultural heritage and cultural appropriation in the context of global networking. Ly Tran, Internationalisation Officer, will present the new and planned programmes and offers of the International Office.

Internationalisation is a comprehensive process that is promoted by politics and university policy. Organisation, management and teaching are to be designed in such a way that the internationally composed university community can act successfully and is best equipped for the social changes of the globalised world. Internationalisation is a new focus in the work of the Weimar University of Music, to which a working group together with the International Office is intensively dedicated.
