Grief and love

World premiere of the opera "Antiliebestrank" by Giordano Bruno do Nascimento in Weimar

This is already the seventh presentation of a new music theatre work by former Weimar composition student Giordano Bruno do Nascimento in his former city of study: the opera "Antiliebestrank", which is to be understood metaphorically, based on the libretto by Eszter Johanna Barta, will have its world premiere on Friday, 18 November at 7:30 pm in the youth and cultural centre "mon ami".

The librettist Eszter Johanna Barta, who studies at the Department of Musicology Weimar-Jena, is also directing. The stage and costumes are by Sara Drasdo.

A project orchestra of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar will play under the direction of Giordano Bruno do Nascimento. Lisa Schmidt, Allegra Banks and Ksenia Khlestkina sing the main roles.

Further performances will take place on Saturday, 19 and Sunday, 20 November at the mon ami. A public dress rehearsal is already invited on Thursday, 17 November at 7:30 pm.

Tickets cost 10 euros, reduced rate 5 euros, and are available at the Tourist Information in Weimar and at the box office.

The production team summarises the opera plot with the following words: "How far are you willing to go to help a loved one and at what cost? In this largely metaphorical opera, the ambivalences of grief and love collide: between dream sequences and loud inner monologues, person A tries to overcome the loss of person C. The opera's storyline is a story of love and grief. Person B decides to intervene to the best of his ability to help A and creates an anti-love potion. But is it right to play God in this way? Can such a potion influence true feelings? And isn't an anti-love potion, if brewed from love, just a love potion?"

This opera is neither a science fiction dystopia of the near future, nor does it offer concrete answers to emerging questions. Rather, it is "an ongoing musical-scenic reflection in ten surreal images".

Giordano Bruno do Nascimento recently completed his Master's degree in composition with a concert exam at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar in the class of Prof. Michael Obst. Born in Brazil in 1981, the multi-award-winning composer and conductor has long since made a name for himself in the new music scene. Scholarships, prizes and artistic residencies have taken him to the Opera Elect Company in Idaho (USA), the Künstlerhof Schreyahn, the "Op Enheim" in Warsaw (Poland) and the ISELP in Brussels (Belgium), among others.

In recent years he has premiered his operas "Lucie", "The Marble Doll", "The Beautiful Truth", "Global Players", "The Truth Sisters" and "Mother" in Weimar. His works for chamber ensembles and orchestra have been performed at various festivals, including the Pan Music Festival in Seoul (South Korea), DCMF in Daegu (South Korea), Il Suono (Italy), Klangwerkstatt Berlin, Sao Paulo Contemporary Music Festival (Brazil), B-Classic Festival (Belgium) and also the Berlin "Pyramidale".
