Most of the choir members are enrolled in conducting or vocal studies. However, there are also some students who are enrolled at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The choir was originally founded as a madrigal choir by Walter Rein in 1926. Since 1997 it has been directed by Professor Jürgen Puschbeck. The choir, praised for its sound culture, is a frequent guest at both national and international festivals and competitions, including those in Marktoberdorf, Graz, Belfort, Fulda, and Tolosa. Numerous prizes and awards are evidence of the artistic quality of the ensemble. The choir has toured in Italy, in the Ukraine and the United States as well as in Japan. Highlights of the choir's work with orchestra have been performances of works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, in which it collaborated with such renowned conductors as Kurt Masur, Fabio Luisi, Max Pommer, and Helmuth Rilling. The choir's main focus, however, is on a cappella music from the 16th to 20th century.
