Transcultural Music Studies

As a specific profile of a broadly understood musicology, Transcultural Music Studies approaches music within socio-cultural, historical and global contexts, regardless of the origin or national affiliation of music. This also involves transcultural and global processes in musical practice.

Field research, procedures of editing and post-processing of audio as well as video materials are part of the creation of data. Collaborative research with partners at home and abroad or music as "intangible cultural heritage" (in the sense of the UNESCO Convention of 2003) are further focal points of study in the profile.

The research is strongly interdisciplinary and project-oriented, as the practitioners whose music is to be studied are involved in defining focal points in the research. It is required to work in related disciplines as well as to apply empirical methods. Transcultural Music Studies is divided into four main areas: Cultural Theory, Musicology / Music Research, Archiving and Applied Projects.

Students acquire important research skills in practice on international excursions. Professional fields include international cultural mediation, bi-lateral research cooperation, cultural policy and others.
