Information about Entrance Exams for Opera Coaching

The decisive basis for successfully studying opera coaching are solid piano skills that have been acquired over many years of piano lessons, since the requirements, particularly in the piano studies, are extraordinarily diverse and extensive (major area, piano, playing scores, playing piano reductions/concert literature, Lied accompaniment, harpsichord). Diligence, stamina and the ability to work under pressure are important qualities for accompanist's vocation.

Extensive language skills, in particular a dependable and fluent command of the German language, are just as important as the manual skills.

In order to study and subsequently work as an opera accompanist, very good communication skills and excellent language competencies are expected, which not only allow the in-depth comprehension of the music theatre works, but also facilitate the verbal communication with singers, conductors and stage directors. It is also advantageous to have basic knowledge of important opera languages (Italian, French) as well as the English language.

Due to the extremely large amount of music theatre literature on the curriculum, it is very important to possess experience playing from piano reductions (opera, operetta, musicals, symphonic choral works), very good sight-reading skills, and a very large interest in music theatre in general.

Potential accompanists should be good team workers with an outgoing personality and be sensitive in their treatment of other people.
