Audiences are fascinated in particular by the band's joie de vivre which spreads to its listeners. Founded by Prof. Gero Schmidt-Oberländer as in-house ensemble at the Department of Music Education, the SchuMu-BigBand is made up almost exclusively of students taking degrees in music education. A number of musicologists and an architect bolster the current numbers. The ensemble's regular concerts at venues in Weimar as well as the wider local area are received enthusiastically. An open-air concert as part of the Fête de la musique in Weimar, a guest appearance at the Big-Band-Night held at the legendary Moritzbastei in Leipzig, and joint projects with various jazz choirs were some of the highlights in recent years. In September 2012, the SchuMu-BigBand gave the opening concert of the 1. National Music Education Congress at the Weimarhalle, playing for an audience of more than 1,000 music teachers from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Few weeks later, the band travelled to Luxembourg, where the musicians performed at the local Jazz-Club in the presence of Luxembourg's minister of culture. 2014 the band framed a speech of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin musically, and played at the Buchenwald-Day in the Deutschen Nationaltheater. A partnership links to the Uni-BigBand Bayreuth.
