Information on the Coronavirus

The situation with the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) is changing constantly. We ask that you inform yourselves about the current situation via the trust-worthy channels.

The following measures will be taken by the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, from March 16 until May 4, 2020:

  • All university buildings stay closed until May 4, 2020.
  • No events will take place during that time.
  • The rooms are not available for any means of studying, practising or teaching.
  • The library and the archive are also closed.
  • There will be no consulting times during office hours.
  • You can contact the administrative staff via e-mail or phone, they keep on working regularly.
  • Teaching lessons in summer semester start on May 4, 2020. The summer semester will be extended by a few weeks.

  • Auditions: Will auditions be postponed or cancelled?
    At this stage, auditions are not postponed. Please follow the latest updates on our website for more information.

     
  • Exam period: Will exams be held at the end of the semester as planned?
    At the moment we can’t give a general answer to this question. Nobody knows at the moment when normal life will be possible again in Germany. All areas of life must be subordinated to the priority of containing the pandemic by all means. The HfM is no exception. We assume that teaching lessons will start again on the 4th of May. That's where we stand today. It can change from day to day. Because nobody can make serious announcements about the current state of affairs at the beginning of May. Please adjust all your business and private calendars to this.

     
  • Exam dates: Will examinations, like graduating concerts be postponed if they are planned for after the 4th of May?
    At the moment we are working on the assumption that all exams and concerts planned for after the 4th of May will be able to happen. However, the rule is that the deadline for exams will be extended by the length of the shutdown. If it is difficult or impossible for you to organise a later date at short notice, then please contact the examinations office. It is possible that you might be able to avoid a postponement. There will be alternative dates for the exams cancelled in March and April as soon as we are able to plan with certainty.

     
  • Examination deadlines: Will the due date for term papers and theses be extended because the university and libraries are closed?
    Yes, the deadlines for all forms of assessment are extended by the duration of the period in which the university is closed. This also applies to theses for which the library is required, for instance. The allotted time will be paused and will restarted when university services are running again. You will, of course, be informed about this.

    If your thesis is already finished or so close to being finished that you want to submit during the shutdown: Post the correct number of copies to the examinations office (the date on the postage stamp counts as the submission date) or put it in the letterbox slot beside the entrance of the administration office. The postponement also applied to the length of the right to examination which you have left.

     
  • Final exams and new degrees: What do I do when my exams are postsponed and I can’t continue to the next part of my degree (for instance, Master’s)?
    UPDATE: Until the end of the summer semester 2020 (30.09.2020), the following regulation applies: If only the final examination of your subject is missing and you have fulfilled all other study and examination requirements, you can already change to the next course of study (e.g. Master). In that case please write a short, informal application to Mrs. Signe Pribbernow (signe.pribbernow@hfm-weimar.de). You can then make up your final examination until the 30th of September, 2020.

     
  • Thoska and proof of enrolment: Can I validate my Thoska somewhere? How do I get my proof of enrolment?
    You can’t use the validation machines in the universtiy buildings because all of them are closed to the public. Please use the printed proof of enrolment together with your identity card or other identification documents to prove your identity for the use of public transport or to other institutions. If you do not have the printed proof of enrolment, please write an e-mail to studium@hfm-weimar.de and provide your postal address. At the moment, no certificates are sent to foreign postal addresses. We will then send you an electronic document which you can use together with an identity card.

     
  • Travel and classes: Should I come to Weimar if I don’t live there at the moment? Will classes definitely start on the 4th of May?
    You should not travel to Weimar at this time. Travelling should be avoided in general at the moment. You will not be able to use university services anyway, including practice rooms. It is not possible to say when the university facilities will be able to open again with any certainty at the moment. We are currently planning to start classes on the 4th of May. You will be informed immediately if this date changes.

     
  • Student status: Can I apply to take a semester off because of the uncertain situation? Or, will the summer semester automatically be declared a semester of leave for all students?
    You can apply for leave at any time. Your application will be processes quickly and can be approved as long as the usual criteria are fulfilled. There will be no automatic declaration of leave: The start of the lecture period has currently been postponed by four weeks.  If this remains the case, then the semester will run with different dates, but it will be just as long, in all likelihood.

     
  • Practice rooms: Why can’t the university make practice rooms available if you practice in there alone?
    University buildings are closed. That is why we are sadly unable to offer practice spaces.

     
  • Borrowing from the library: Can I borrow books from the library/return them?
    No, both the main library in the Fürstenhaus, as well as the library for musicology in the hzh are closed for all users. You can borrow and return media as soon as the university is open again. No overdue fees will be charged for this time. The library team requests that you still extend your loan via your user account in the online catalogue (OPAC).

     
  • Borrowing instruments: How can I borrow or return instruments?
    Neither is possible at the moment. If you want to return an instrument, please send an email to the finance department/instrument lending (Martin Appelstiel – martin.appelstiel(at)hfm-weimar.de). We will note your request to return the instrument and you will be informed as soon as it is possible to return it.

    The exception is when you have finished your studies at the HfM and so the loan instrument has to be returned. In this case, please also contact Mr. Appelstiel. Otherwise, the other conditions of loan still apply as written in the loan regulations.

     
  • Financing my studies: What can I do if I have lost the income I need to finance my studies due to the corona pandemic?
    Numerous institutions have compiled information on emergency aid for students. Mostly they refer to options that are available anyway. A good overview can be found at the Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund. The Deutsches Studentenwerk also published FAQs. You can also contact the ASA (studium(at)hfm-weimar.de) or the corresponding departments of the Studierendenwerk Thüringen.

Closure of the University library

Due to the coronavirus the library is closed until May 4, 2020. The rooms of the library are not accessible to users. Lending and returns are not possible.

Please renew your borrowed media independently during the closing time via the library account in the online catalogue (OPAC). The first three letters of the surname are preset as the password for the account. During the closing time there are no reminder fees.

Letter of the president to the students (27.03.2020)

Dear fellow students,

in these days – amongst many other things – you may be asking yourself under which circumstances your studies will continue in the summer semester. Today we would like to inform you about our present considerations regarding the summer term 2020.

In the current situation we assume that we will not have a usual summer semester this year. However you can expect that your teachers will support you in the best way possible. We are all called to be as flexible as possible in organizing the semester and the rest the year.

Today’s status is as follows: As teaching in the summer semester will start on May, 4th 2020, it is highly probable that it will not end on July, 10th 2020 as originally planned. It is possible that the teaching will start even later and it may go on untill September 2020. We can assure you that on the basis of our regulations you will not have any disadvantages from this situation concerning the credits of your academic results.

Digital learning will play a stronger role in our teaching in the future. We are working hard to provide the technical support needed – and our teachers will support your self-studies as good as they possibly can. Especially in the field of higher music education it won’t be possible to replace face to face teaching in a digital way. Nevertheless we take the current situation as a chance to experiment with digital formats of teaching and learning.

Please rest assured: We will try our best to support you in this challenging time, all your questions will be answered as good and as fast as we can.

Measures in the City of Weimar and the Free State of Thuringia (public notices)

The following measures apply throughout Thuringia between March 25 and April 8, 2020:

  • It is only possible to stay in public spaces alone, with members of one's own household or with another person who does not live in one's own household.
  • Contacts with other persons are to be kept to a minimum. Keep a minimum distance of 1.5m!
  • Permitted are going to work, emergency care, shopping, visits to the doctor, participation in meetings, necessary appointments and examinations. Help for others as well as outdoor exercises are also possible.


The following measures shall apply in Weimar provisionally until April 19, 2020:

  • If you have been in a high-risk area within the last 14 days you must remain in your apartment/room. High-risk areas are defined by the Robert Koch Institute.
  • Returned travellers must register with the health department in Weimar. If you show cold-like symptoms (like a dry cough, fever, runny nose, fatigue, problems breathing) immediately contact your doctor via telephone, the on-call medical service (Ph: 116 117) or the city of Weimar hotline (Ph: 03643 762555)!
  • There are also special rules for people who have personal contact with someone who has a confirmed case of the coronavirus (for instance, they are not allowed to enter the university or restaurants).
  • All organised events are banned in the entire city of Weimar. You are not allowed to run or participate in any events, especially all kinds of entertainment or parades, dancing, sports, trade fairs or exhibitions. This includes both open-air and in-door events.
  • Public institutions and services in Thuringia are closed to the public. Apart from the LISZT University and the Bauhaus University Weimar, these also include school, kindergartens, and afterschool care as well as all music schools, theatres, concert halls, museums, cinemas, swimming pools, sports centres and playgrounds, restaurants, bars, clubs, and community centres. Please refer to the public notices from 18.03.2020 and 17.03.2020 (see below) to find out which facilities are also closed.
  • Visiting patients in clinics and aged-care facilities is only possible to a limited extent.
  • Meetings in churches, mosques, synagogues and other religious communities are prohibited.

How to help stopping the spread of the coronavirus

  • Keep a generous distance between yourself and others (approx. 1 to 2 metres)
  • Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly with water and soap for at least 20 seconds. Be sure to wash hands often, especially after blowing your nose, sneezing or coughing.
  • Keep your hands away from your face – avoid touching your mouth, eyes or nose with your hands.
  • Sneeze and cough into the inside of your elbow or into a tissue. Dispose of tissues into a bin.
  • Don't shake hands.
  • Stay at home if possible!
