Born in Westheim (Bavaria) in 1944, Prof. Dr. Christoph Stölzl followed his schooling at a humanist grammar school and later studies of history, literature, and sociology with an academic career researching the history of European nationalism. In 1974, he left the academic career path to work in museums: first with the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, then as director of the Munich Stadtmuseum between 1980 and 1987, and thereafter as founding managing director of the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin until 1999. Christoph Stölzl has organised numerous large-scale exhibitions on European cultural history and has published several contributions on topics in European history, culture, and politics.
Between 2000/2001, he was senator of culture and science in Berlin, and vice-president of the Berlin senate between 2002 and 2006. Since 2001, he has taught arts management and cultural history as honorary professor at the Hochschule für Musik 'Hanns Eisler' and the Freie Universität Berlin. In addition, he was active as a contributor to newspapers, radio, and television. Prof. Dr. Christoph Stölzl has been president of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar since July 2010.
