Ulf-Dieter Schaaff has been principal flautist in the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin) since 1995 and was a member of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra in 2017. Born in Düsseldorf, he studied under Andreas Blau, Peter-Lukas Graf (teaching and orchestra diploma) and took his concert exam with András Adorján in Cologne. He had his first orchestral experiences in Basel, Düsseldorf, Mönchengladbach/ Krefeld and as a principal flautist in the Symphony Orchestra of Westphalia (Westfälisches Sinfonieorchester) in Recklinghausen. He also played as assistant principal flautist at the Berlin Philharmonics.
Ulf-Dieter Schaaff also appeared as soloist at the Philharmonic Orchestra of Cottbus an the New Westphalia Philharmonic, amongst others. He played the Carl Nielsen Flute Concerto with "his" Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (conducted by Marin Alsop), Carl Reinecke (conducted by Andris Nelsons) and Georg Philipp Telemann (conducted by Andrea Marcon). He works on chamber music as a foundation member of the "14 Berliner Flötisten" and in the wind quintet of the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, amongst others. Concerts take place annually in the historic "Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee" in Berlin, set up under his initiative. He is also an international acclaimed teacher. He holds master classes in Germany an Poland and has been teaching in South Korea and Taiwan since 1994 and 2015 respectively. In 2000 he took over leadership of flute class at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT in Weimar. In 2003 he first started teaching at the Sakuyo University of music in Kurashiki (Japan) as a visiting professor. Ulf-Dieter Schaaff made his debut in Japan with the pianist Hiroaki Nakane in Shirakawa Hall in Nagoya. Concerts and masterclasses then followed in Tokyo, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Fukuoka and other cities. He also regularly wrote Musical Analysis for the japanese magazine "THE FLUTE".
His CDs, "horizontal & vertical" and "Luftpost aus Wien / Airmail from Vienna" were published in collaboration with Deutschlandradio Kultur. These recordings received excellent reviews in the specialized press. In August 2017 the Flute Quartets of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were released in collaboration with the Dutch CD label PENTATONE.
