Michael Sanderling - Violoncello

Michael Sanderling
(c) Marco Borggreve

22 - 27 July 2019

His career has seen success in three major fields: as an instrumentalist, as a teacher and as a conductor. It all started for Michael Sanderling as an orchestral musician: he was engaged by Kurt Masur in 1987 as a solo cellist of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig at the age of 19. Later he was successful as a cello virtuoso throughout the world’s music centres; his chamber music partners included Elisabeth Leonskaja and Julia Fischer among others. Finally, Michael Sanderling became professor of violoncello at the Frankfurter Musikhochschule – only then to exchange his cello bow for a conductor's baton. He finished his solo career in 2010 and restarted as Maestro. Ever since the 2011/12 season he has been principal conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic. He has been a regular guest at the Weimar Master Classes since 2005. His courses are legendary because of his high demands, his encouragement and the humanness which he promotes and out of which his music is sparked.
