This violist can glance back on a venerable series of successes and a long career. Barbara Westphal studied in London and New York and attained concert maturity with Itzhak Perlman and Michael Tree. In the 1983 ARD music competition she won the only prize for solo viola as well as the Busch-Prize. From 1978 to 1985 Barbara Westphal was the violist of the renowned Delos Quartet (USA). As a soloist and chamber musician, she gives concerts worldwide and regularly performs at international festivals such as Santa Fe (New Mexico), Sarasota (Florida), the Great Lakes Festival (Michigan), Incontri in Terra di Siena and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival among others. In 1997 she founded the Trio da Salò with violinist Ani Kavafian and cellist Gustav Rivinius. Since 2009 she also performs with Anke Dill, Ulf Schneider, Volker Jacobsen and Gustav Rivinius in the Bartholdy Quintet. As a sought-after teacher, Barbara Westphal has held the viola professorship at the Musikhochschule Lübeck since 1989.
