The International BACH | LISZT Organ Competition Erfurt–Weimar pays homage to both luminaries of Thuringia's musical history. Johann Sebastian Bach's relationship to the organ is known the world over. In contrast, many of Franz Liszt's organ works and their importance to the development of the organ's chromaticity is relatively unknown, something which should change in 2011, the Liszt Year (the celebration of the 200th anniversary of his birth and the 125th anniversary of his death).
The International BACH | LISZT Organ Competition is organized by the City and Cathedral of Erfurt in cooperation with the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar.
Since 2008, the competition has resumed and expanded the former International "Cathedral Mount" Organ Competition that took place in Erfurt in 1999. Through the diversity and the importance of historic and modern instruments, the current competition has taken on worldwide significance.
