LISZT University archive | Thuringian Regional music archive
'The highest towers are begun with their fundament'
Thomas A. Edison
The LISZT UNIVERSITY archive | Thuringian Regional music archive (HSA | ThLMA) with its valuable collections of documents and sheet music provides a crucial fundament for the academic study of Central Germany's musico-cultural past.
Thuringia's music hoard is richly stocked with musical sources from almost eight centuries, among them Thuringia's earliest source with musical notation (ca. 1200), the historical sheet music archive of the Deutsches Nationaltheater (18th–20th centuries), numerous archives from Thuringian parishes (16th–19th centuries), the music library of the Allgemeiner Deutscher Musikverein (ADMV), the effects of several composers, the Thuringian folk song archive, an ethnographic collection of instruments, as well as a comprehensive record archive. As the hub for Thuringian music history, the archive makes available (rare) secondary literature and academic collections of various kinds, and together with its partners provides the institutional basis for an effective co-operation between the regional research initiatives on music history.
The HSA | ThLMA also hosts a researcher from the international music source encyclopaedia (RISM). The archive's (and other Thuringian libraries' and archives') music manuscripts from the 17th and 18th centuries are catalogued here, to be made available through RISM's online database.
The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) also financially supports a project which catalogues the historic music library of the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar (18th–20th centuries).
In the context of the state-run project 'new media', the LISZT UNIVERSITY's sound archive (1946–1989) is also being digitised for use by research and teaching, as well as by the general public.
