Matthias Müller
Lecturer of Jazz Trombone
Hochschulzentrum am Horn
Matthias Müller studied jazz trombone at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen with Henning Berg. He moved to Berlin in 2004 and has since played with a number of outstanding improvisers such as John Edwards, Mark Sanders, Sofia Jernberg, Eve Risser, George Lewis, Johannes Bauer, Tomeka Reid, Jeb Bishop, Tobias Delius, Olaf Rupp, John Butcher, Nate Wooley, Clayton Thomas, Angelika Niescier, Axel Dörner and many others.
He is a member of the ‘Splitter Orchester’, the 21-piece ensemble of the Berlin real-time music scene, and played for many years in the ‘Deutsch-Französisches Jazzensemble’ under the direction of Albert Mangelsdorff. His main bands include the duo ‘Superimpose’ with drummer Christian Marien, the pure trombone trio ‘Bishop/Müller/Muche’ and the trio ‘Der Dritte Stand’.
In addition to improvised music, Müller also performs new music and writes music for theatre and dance. Concert tours and festivals have taken him to Africa, Asia, Australia, North and South America and various European countries. He has released more than 50 CDs with his own projects, including on his own label ‘MaMüMusic’. In 2024, he was nominated for the German Jazz Award in the brass instruments category.
His playing style is characterised by an extraordinary range of unconventional and partly self-developed playing techniques, which he always subordinates to the musical process.
