After a diploma course in Music Education, Stefan Bauer started as an assistant teacher for Piano-Playing at Schools, at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT in Weimar, while simultaneously completing a supplementary degree in Music Theory. He has been a permanent member of staff in Weimar since the mid-90s and was appointed professor honoris causa in 2007, not least for his services as a long-standing head of organisation and jury member for the GROTRIAN-STEINWEG Federal Competition for Piano-Playing at Schools.

As an author, Stefan Bauer works for Helbling Verlag Esslingen, among others, and he has recently published practice-oriented articles for the magazine ‘Musikimpulse’ (mip). After two larger publications in the field of arrangements/piano arrangements, he became the first editor in charge of the publication ‘Sing & Swing – Liedbegleitung Klavier 2’ (‘Sing & Swing – Piano Accompaniment 2’) which was published in August 2015. Four volumes of his ‘Lieder-Hits für Tasten-Kids’ (‘Hit Songs for Keyboard Kids’) were published between 2016 and 2019.

From an artistic perspective, Stefan Bauer’s work as a pianist lies primarily within the field of jazz, but it is the connections between traditional and modern styles that fascinate him, above all. His cabaret programme ‘Goethe & Schiller – Greatest Hits’ is certainly worth a mention: it is a celebration of a musical, creative approach to lyrics by these two great authors, transforming them from classical pieces into the music of today's pop culture.
