The University of Music welcomes 94 new students from around the world

The university is very happy about the ‘freshers’: the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar welcomes 94 new students for the summer semester of 2025. They were formally enrolled with a ceremony and lots of music on Monday, 7 April in the Saal Am Palais.

They were welcomed by university president Prof. Anne-Kathrin Lindig and Arild Hansen, the chairman of the student council. This means that a total of 824 young musicians, music educators and musicologists are currently studying in the European City of Culture.

Of the 94 new students, 66 are enrolled in Weimar for the first time – the others are switching from a bachelor's to a master's programme, for example. The 66 first-year students are divided into 27 German and 39 international students. They come to Weimar from all over the world – including from all regions of Asia, South and North America, and many European countries.

The largest increases this time were recorded by the Department of Musicology Weimar-Jena (with Arts Management), with a total of 21 new students; the Department of New Music and Jazz, with 20; the Department of Wind Instruments and Percussion, with 19; and the Department of Music Education and Church Music, with 14.

The Department of String Instruments and Harp follows with 13 and the Department of Vocal Studies and Theatre with 12 – as well as the Department of Piano with 6 new students. A total of four new students in mobility programmes (e.g. Erasmus+) are coming to the Music university in Weimar from Italy, Hungary and Ukraine.
