Prof. Dr. Egbert Seidel gave last lecture as honorary professor for music physiology and musician medicine

After 30 years, a professional and knowledgeable era comes to an end: Prof. Dr. Egbert Seidel held his last lecture in the field of Music Physiology and Musicians' Medicine at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar on Wednesday, January 25. He had first taught his specialty in 1993.

In 1998, a cooperation agreement was signed between the university and the Sophien- und Hufeland-Klinikum in Weimar, where Seidel most recently served as head physician of the Center for Physical and Rehabilitative Medicine. Since 2000, the physician has taught as an honorary professor at the Weimar University of Music, and in 2017 his series of events in the lecture hall of the University Center at the Horn was renamed "Musicians' Health."

"I would like to say thank you for all you have done for our students, teachers and also research," said University President Prof. Anne-Kathrin Lindig in bidding farewell to Prof. Dr. Egbert Seidel, who as a violinist herself had often turned to him for advice. The Dean of Faculty III, Prof. Jörn Arnecke, described musician medicine and musician health as an "important topic across the university."

Seidel himself once again emphasized a core aspect of his work: "Prevention is everything. Good preparation and follow-up are quite important in instrumental playing, and many insights can be derived from sports medicine for this."

Egbert Johannes Seidel was born in Weimar in 1958. He studied human medicine in Jena from 1978 to 1984 and then worked as an assistant physician at the Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Jena under Prof. Dr. J. Scheibe. He was awarded his doctorate in 1986. In 1988, Seidel became a specialist in sports medicine, and one year later he was appointed head of the Department of Physiotherapy at the Chair of Sports Medicine at the University of Jena.

In 1990, he was appointed head physician of the Department of Physical and Rehabilitative Medicine at the Weimar Clinics and Polyclinics. In 1998 he became head physician of the Center for Physical and Rehabilitative Medicine of the Sophien- und Hufeland-Klinikum Weimar.

Egbert Seidel also took on the role of medical director of the Weimar Sports Medicine Examination Center of the German Olympic Sports Confederation in 2007. Since 1993, he has taught the subject of "Musicians' Medicine" at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, since 2000 in the role of Honorary Professor of Music Physiology and Musicians' Medicine.

He was also a leading member of numerous medical associations and also made a name for himself in the field of physical and rehabilitative medicine, sports medicine and musician's medicine as editor of the book series "Praktische Physiotherapie / Sporttherapie" and as author of more than 300 publications.
