Eligibility Criteria

B.A. Programmes in Musicology

Musicology (major subject)

  • You will need to hold the 'Allgemeine Hochschulreife' or the 'Fachgebundene Hochschulreife' (as defined by § 60, 2 of the Thüringer Hochschulgesetz), or equivalent
  • You will need to pass the entry examination for musicology (major subject)
  • You will need to demonstrate your proficiency in two modern languages, or in one modern language and Latin (five years of lessons without A-levels examination, three years of lessons with A-levels examination, or certificate of B1 standard (A2 or B1 for Latin) in accordance with the agreed European standards)
  • International applicants will need to demonstrate their proficiency in German to a C1 standard, for example with the 'Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang' (DSH), the 'Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache' (TestDaF), 'The European Language Certificates' (telc), or equivalent language certificates such as those awarded by the Goethe Institut. We recommend attending a certified language school.

Musicology (minor subject) 

  • You will need to hold the 'Allgemeine Hochschulreife' or the 'Fachgebundene Hochschulreife' (as defined by § 60, 2 of the Thüringer Hochschulgesetz), or equivalent
  • You will need to demonstrate your proficiency in two modern languages, or in one modern language and Latin (five years of lessons without A-levels examination, three years of lessons with A-levels examination, or certificate of B1 standard (A2 or B1 for Latin) in accordance with the agreed European standards)
  • You will need to meet any entrance requirements for your chosen major subject

Music Performance (minor subject)

  • You will need to meet all entrance requirements for the programme in musicology (major subject), with the exception of the associated entrance examination
  • You will need to pass the entrance examination for music performance (minor subject)

Intercultural Music and Events Management (minor subject)

  • You will need to hold the 'Allgemeine Hochschulreife' or the 'Fachgebundene Hochschulreife' (as defined by § 60, 2 of the Thüringer Hochschulgesetz), or equivalent
  • You will need to demonstrate your proficiency in two modern languages (five years of lessons without A-levels examination, three years of lessons with A-levels examination, or certificate of B1 standard in accordance with the agreed European standards)
  • You will need to meet the entrance requirements for your chosen major subject
  • You will need to pass the entrance examination for intercultural music and events management (minor subject) [or, alternatively, you will need to pass the entrance examination for musicology (major subject)]

M.A. Programmes in Musicology

All Specialisations

  • You must have completed a first university-level degree with a grade of 2.5 or better (Magister, Diplom, Bachelor, or similar, with musicology as your major or minor subject, or with equivalent subject focus)
  • You will need to demonstrate your proficiency in two modern languages, or one modern language and Latin (five years of lessons without A-levels examination, three years of lessons with A-levels examination, or certificate of B1 standard (A2 or B1 for Latin) in accordance with the agreed European standards)
  • International applicants will need to demonstrate their proficiency in German to a C1 standard, for example with the "'Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang' (DSH), the 'Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache' (TestDaF), 'The European Language Certificates' (telc), or equivalent language certificates such as those awarded by the Goethe Institut. Specialisation in Music Performance

  • In addition to the above, either your previous degree will need to have included music performance as a minor subject, or you will need to take an audition in order to demonstrate performance abilities of an equivalent standard.


Specialisation in Arts Management

  • In addition to the above, your previous degree will need to have included Intercultural Music and Events Management (or a subject with equivalent course content). 

M.A. Programmes in Arts Management

All Specialisations

  • You must have completed a first university-level degree in a relevant subject with a grade of 2.5 or better (Magister, Diplom, Bachelor, or similar; relevant programmes are those which include courses in cultural studies, musicology, and management, or include at least 30 credits worth of studies in arts management)
  • You will need to demonstrate your proficiency in two modern languages, or one modern language and Latin (five years of lessons without A-levels examination, three years of lessons with A-levels examination, or certificate of B1 standard (A2 or B1 for Latin) in accordance with the agreed European standards)
  • International applicants will need to demonstrate their proficiency in German to a C1 standard, for example with the 'Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang' (DSH), the 'Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache' (TestDaF), 'The European Language Certificates' (telc), or equivalent language certificates such as those awarded by the Goethe Institut. We recommend attending a certified language school.
  • You will have relevant job experience, usually demonstrated by an internship of at least six weeks
  • You will need to attend an interview with us

M.Mus. Programmes in Music Theory

Essential requirements are the completion of a Bachelor's, Diplom, or a Magister degree (for example in music education, musicology, or composition) as well as the successful completion of the entrance examination.
