BBC New Generation Artist: The Weimar Piano Student Mariam Batsashvili Takes her Next Career Leap

Most recently, the young Weimar piano student Mariam Batsashvili has performed as an "ECHO Rising Star" in all the important European concert halls. Now, the 24-year-old is continuing on with her breath-taking career: She was selected by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) as a "BBC New Generation Artist 2017-2019". With that, completely new opportunities open up for the artistic development and concert activity of the Masters student in Prof. Grigory Gruzman's class at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar.

This programme for young artists, founded by BBC Radio 3 in 1999, belongs to the most important talent pools in the world. Every year, 6 or 7 new highly-gifted young musicians are selected to be promoted. They are then able to perform concerts in London and other parts of Great Britain, debut at festivals such as Cheltenham or Edinburgh, collaborate with various BBC orchestras, record CDs at BBC Radio 3 – and perhaps even perform at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.

Along with the Weimar pianist Mariam Batsashvili, the Weimar voice student Catriona Morison, who belongs to the class of Prof. Siegfried Gohritz, was also selected for the "BBC New Generation Artist 2017-2019" Award.

Born in Tbilisi (Georgia) in 1993, Mariam Batsashvili began her career with first prizes at the Liszt Competitions in Weimar (2011) and Utrecht (2014). Since 2011 she has studied at the Weimar University of Music under Prof. Grigory Gruzman. In the 2016/17 concert season she played concerts throughout Europe as an "ECHO Rising Star" of the "European Concert Hall Organisation" (ECHO) – upon the nomination of the renowned concert halls Bozar Brussels and Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

The 2017/18 season also holds many highlights in store for Mariam Batsahvili: She will perform at the Berlin Philharmonie, the St. Petersburg Philharmonie, the Tonhalle in Zurich and the Wigmore Hall in London. In addition, she will play Monzart's Piano Concerto KV 488 with the MDR Sinfonieorchester, the Orchestre National de Belgique and the Württembergische Kammerorchester in Heilbronn.

Tours will take her to Mexico and the USA, among other countries. She will perform Bach's Goldberg Variations for her debut at the Rheingau Musikfestival 2018.
