Weimar – Bayreuth? That is new. The first five competitions took place exclusively in Weimar. The surroundings, however, have changed. Since 2005 the competition has a 'younger brother', a piano-orientated offspring – the exceedingly important FRANZ LISZT Competition for Young Pianists. In 2007 the president, Prof. Rolf-Dieter Arens, found a collaborator in order to avoid competition from the other existing four competitions at the LISZT SCHOOL of Music Weimar.  His search was successful in Bayreuth – with the piano manufacturer Steingraeber, the city of Bayreuth and with the Oberfranken foundation.

Thus this competition continues on a new partnership basis with the first round and concerts taking place in Bayreuth, the second and third rounds, including concerts, in Weimar and the European Liszt Night taking place in both cities. With this and other projects the LISZT SCHOOL of Music Weimar, which is named after and based on the ideas of Franz Liszt, is thus embarking on a historically relevant journey of solidarity with Bayreuth.

It is well-known that Bayreuth, Liszt's place of death and the Wagner Festival, owe Liszt a lot. The Bayreuth music life, centered around the Wagner theatre, is now experiencing a piano revival with the competition a brilliant, secured future playing field for the elite of young pianists.
