That the music school carries the name Franz Liszt is an acknowledgement - one that expands far beyond just the maintenance of his compositional works. The eponym of The LISZT SCHOOL of Music Weimar was much more than `just´ a piano virtuoso and composer; Franz Liszt was a teacher, court music director, music author and cultural politician – he taught, performed works from unknown composers and initiated the foundation of an orchestral school in Weimar. With the music association `Allgemeiner Deutscher Musikverein´ he founded an influential institution for music culture in Germany and forged plans for a Goethe-Foundation in Weimar. This Goethe-Foundation was to establish a friendly contest for the Arts in this city with its royal residency following antique standards. In annual rotation prizes for music, painting, sculpture and poetry were to be awarded to promote young artists. In reality these (never carried out) plans became a piano competition that The LISZT SCHOOL of Music Weimar organises every three years. Here during this friendly contest, young musicians from different countries can measure their capabilities at a high standard. In 2003 the main focal point of the competition was `Liszt and the Modern´, this year it is Mozart. Works from Franz Liszt along with works of the Vienna Classic from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert as well as Mozart’s student Johann Nepomuk Hummel are this year’s programme.
