Louis Spohr
Through his work as concert master and conductor in Gotha, Erfurt and Nordhausen, Louis Spohr (1784–1859) has contributed a chapter to the music history of Thüringen. This is more than enough reason for the only Musikhochschule in the state of Thüringen to name one of its international competitions after him.
The artistic and pedagogical influence of Spohr on the Weimar Hochschule, however, is more significant than the mere physical closeness of the violinist and composer. After all, like Franz Liszt, Spohr was not only one of the most prominent virtuosos of his century but also a broadly educated pedagogue and a progressive organizer of the cities’ musical life.
Louis Spohr has left us extensive musical works: among others fifteen violin concertos, ten symphonies, thirtysix string quartets as well as numerous operas and oratorios. Until today he is still greatly admired for his expressive melodies in these works.
Louis Spohr therefore offers the young violinists not only an expansion of their repertoire, but also a valuable impression of what can result from a musical education. Living memory of this ideal is the responsibility of the Hochschule and its competitions.
