Peter Schreier
born 1935 in Meissen; strong musical imprint by Rudolf Mauersberger as member of the Dresden Kreuzchor; studies at the state Academy of Music Dresden with Herbert Winkler and Johannes Kemter; later on studies in conducting and choral conducting; 1959 operatic debut in Dresden; after celebrated appearances at the German State Opera, the Vienna State Opera, in Bayreuth and Salzburg invitations to nearly all renowned opera houses worldwide followed; apart from this Peter Schreier is able to look back on an unequalled career as performer of song and from 1970 as conductor; his list of recordings is extraordinary; central composers in his work are Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Wagner and Pfitzner; his art of interpretation especially of the German lied is impressive – his embodiment of the evangelists in Bach’s works epoch making; in the role of Tamino Peter Schreier took leave from opera in 2000; in December 2005 he concluded his career as singer with Bach’s Christmas Oratorio; Peter Schreier passed on his competence to young singers during many master classes
