The Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra

The Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra (FLKO), established in 1952 as the top ensemble of the LISZT SCHOOL of Music in Weimar, is the signature ensemble of the school’s rich orchestral tradition. The orchestra’s section leaders are, without exception, professors at the Liszt School of Music, and have many years of experience as concert masters and section leaders in notable orchestras such as the Weimar State Orchestra, the Dresden State Orchestra, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Chamber Orchestra. Students who play in the FLKO are among the elite musicians studying at the LISZT SCHOOL of Music Weimar. Many of the students have won national and international competitions, and often serve as substitutes in leading positions in professional orchestras, such as the Weimar State Orchestra, the Middle German Radio Symphony Orchestra in Leipzig, and the Dresden State Orchestra.

The Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra of Weimar has completed a number of successful European and international concert tours, including one to South Korea, and counts Helmuth Rilling, Peter Schreier, Wolfgang Rögner, and the Cantor of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Christoph Biller, among its guest conductors. It has also undertaken projects with the LISZT SCHOOL of Music’s Chamber Choir under the direction of Jürgen Puschbeck. Renowned musicians such as Thomas Zehetmair, Rolf-Dieter Arens und Andreas Hartmann have also performed with the FLKO. Some of the orchestra’s special accomplishments include a number of recordings for NAXOS conducted by Prof. Nicolás Pasquet with works by Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Mozart, Vivaldi and its most recent recording entitled four symphonies by Ernst Wilhelm Wolf.

The orchestra was founded by violin professor Fritz Ehlers in 1952 with the tenet that professors would perform in this ensemble together with their most outstanding students. In the 25 years during which Ehlers conducted the ensemble, the orchestra developed the reputation it enjoys today. After Ehlers retired in 1977, Prof. Jörg Hofmann was named conductor of the orchestra, a position he held until 1985. In 1995 the initiative was taken to reform the orchestra, this time under the direction of Andreas Lehmann, violinist of the Weimar Liszt Trio and Concert Master of the Middle German Chamber Orchestra, who, since 2006, is one of the violin professors at the LISZT SCHOOL of Music Weimar.
