The School Archive / THURINGIAN REGIONAL MUSIC ARCHIVE

"Archives and libraries represent the memory of mankind. They educate our consciousness."

(s.a. G. Weißenborn, Memorial, 1948)

The archive at The LISZT SCHOOL of Music Weimar (HSA) was opened on 1. Oktober 1995. It was created from the existing administrative archives at the school as well as from the former institute of folk music research. The HSA offers its records for official, scientific, journalistic and educational purposes, as well as for the observation of justified personal interests, provided that data worthy of protection concerning a person or a third party is not impaired; that means the purpose of the use of the protected information must have a substantial reason. The use depends on the archive regulations. Within the archives, work aids such as identification books and person/ subject indexes for inspection are available.

In the work on and with the existing data the HSA like all archives, has to fulfill three tasks:

  • the safety, preservation and addition of the data,
  • their development and application using computer-assisted records and
  • public-relations work.

The HSA provides numerous possibilities to utilise the expansive data, it tries to gain the attention of students, scientists and musicians to scarcely known sources. In order to maintain its existence so that it can serve further generations as a source for research and artistic practice, restoration and films are made, which are financed both by public, associations and private sponsors.
