Scholarships and funding programmes

The LISZT FOUNDATION awards funding for artistic projects to outstanding musicians with special consideration given to need.

Funding is provided for participation in competitions, masterclasses or concerts, including the necessary funds for fees, travel, accommodation, instrument hire and insurance or the costs of repetition. Grants for instrument purchases or repairs cannot be awarded.
 

Application requirements

Studies at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar or
Training at the university's centre for gifted students at the Schloss Belvedere Music High School
Minimum age: 12 years; maximum age: usually 27 years
Proven good artistic performance
 

The following documents must be enclosed with the application letter:

• Application form (PDF, German)
• Details of the applicant
• Detailed description of education and career
• Description of the intended purpose
• Meaningful assessment of the artistic achievements and eligibility for funding by the main subject teacher
• Proof of need in the form of proof of income or proof of income from the person responsible for maintenance (at least a list of the applicant's monthly income and expenses as well as an overview of monthly savings)
• Applications can be submitted at any time, but must be submitted before the start of the funding programme. Decisions on applications are made on a quarterly basis, but no later than 30 March, 30 June, 30 September and 30 December of each year. Approved applications will be invoiced on presentation of original receipts.

The University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar awards "Deutschlandstipendien" (Germany Scholarships) every year in the winter semester.

Purpose of the scholarship

The aim of the scholarship is to support talented students who are expected to achieve or have already achieved outstanding results in their studies or career. It serves as a living allowance.
 

Eligibility

• Eligible students are those who are enrolled in a first undergraduate degree program (bachelor's degree, diploma, state examination) or in a first master's degree program within the standard period of study at the university. The application must be submitted before the last standard year of study. 
• Students who are already receiving another talent- or performance-based grant that exceeds €30 per month are not eligible for funding.
• The award is independent of income and does not count towards a grant under the BAföG.
   

Selection criteria

• for first-year students: the results achieved in the aptitude test.
• for students who are already enrolled: The academic and examination results achieved to date, for students on a Master's course also the final grade of the previous course of study.
• for all: special successes, awards, prizes, especially in the context of competitions; participation in master classes; previous professional activity(ies) and internships
• social commitment or willingness to take on responsibility
• special personal and family circumstances
   

Duration of scholarship

Scholarships are usually awarded for two semesters (October 2023 - September 2024).
 

Scholarship benefit

The scholarships are endowed with 300 euros per month (living allowance).
 

Application and selection procedure

The application letter must be accompanied by the following documents, including full contact details:

• reason for application
• curriculum vitae, detailed description of education and career, presentation of study and examination achievements (if applicable, by submitting a provisional transcript of records)
• photograph
• informative expert opinion from the main subject teacher or institute director, which, in addition to confirmation of at least a proper course of study, contains a verbal assessment of the artistic, pedagogical or scientific achievements.
• for students of school music, the presentation of an innovative, excellent, school-related project with a letter of motivation (e.g. innovative teaching projects) is possible
• proof of social and societal commitment and willingness to assume responsibility
• proof of special personal and family circumstances

Applications not submitted in due time and form cannot be considered. Applicants who are successful in the preliminary selection will be invited to a personal interview of max. 30 minutes duration.

The scholarships are awarded within the framework of a funding program of the BMBF and on the basis of the Scholarship Program Law (StipG) of the Federal Government in conjunction with the Statutes for the Awarding of Scholarships within the National Scholarship Program of the Federal Government at the FRANZ LISZT SCHOOL of Music Weimar. The announcement of the expected 25 scholarships is subject to the availability of private funds.

In honor of the patron saint of the university, it awards the

FRANZ LISZT PRIZE

The prize is intended to honor students who work in the spirit of Franz Liszt's musical ideal.

Students (individuals or ensembles) who are enrolled at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar can be awarded.

They should have achieved high artistic or scientific academic achievements and in particular be intensively committed to the interests of their fellow students and their university.

Nominations can be submitted by teachers, staff and students of the university. The FRANZ LISZT Prize is awarded annually in spring.

The Franz Liszt Prize is endowed with prize money of 2,000 euros.

The NEUE LISZT STIFTUNG awards study scholarships to outstanding music studentsat the beginning of every year. The Charlotte Krupp Scholarships are awarded on the basis of proven outstanding artistic achievements, with special consideration given to financial need.

Application requirements
Students of the HfM Weimar can apply on the basis of proven excellence.
Scholarships are awarded with special consideration given to financial need.

Duration of scholarship
The scholarships are initially awarded for one year; an extension can be applied for if the above-mentioned application requirements are met.

Scholarship amount
The scholarships are endowed with 500 euros per month for living expenses.

After an initial pre-selection by a committee chaired by Prof Anne-Kathrin Lindig, potential scholarship holders are invited to a presentation followed by an interview.

Applicants from artistic degree programmes must present works of their choice from three stylistic periods in an audition. Applicants from educational/scientific degree programmes must give a ten-minute presentation of their current work.

Every year, the The Liszt Foundation awards a monthly scholarship of 400 euros from the estate of Hans-Dietmar Berghausen to students majoring in singing, particularly mezzo-soprano and soprano.

The scholarship supports the artistic training of excellent young vocal students.

The application requirements are

• Enrolment at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, or
• Training at the Highly Gifted Centre of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar at the Schloss Belvedere Music High School
• Study of singing as a major subject
• Proven excellent artistic achievements

Within the framework of the DAAD scholarship program STIBET I, international students as well as doctoral students of the FRANZ LISZT University can be supported, whose graduation is expected within one year, who show good performance and have got into a situation of need through no fault of their own, or who are socially committed to the university in a special way.

Applicants will be informed in written form about the result of the selection process.

The University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar awards several graduate scholarships every summer on the basis of the Thuringian Graduate Funding Ordinance. This is intended to support doctoral projects or artistic development projects of particularly qualified graduates or master students.

The amount of the scholarship is 1,400 euros per month. In addition, family allowances and/or material and travel expenses up to a maximum of 1,000 euros per year can be reimbursed.

As a rule, the scholarship is granted for up to three years (doctorates) or up to two years (artistic development projects), depending on the expected duration of the project. There is no legal entitlement.

Requirements

• for the funding of a doctoral project: above-average study and examination results, which prove a special aptitude for scientific work, or
• for the funding of an artistic development project: a completed university degree and proof of above-average qualification,
• supervision of the project by at least one professor of the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar as well as the realization of the project at the university

Application documents

• an informal application with a detailed synopsis of the project to be funded (research question with derivation and justification, approach, work plan and time schedule)
• a curriculum vitae in tabular form with a report on previous academic or artistic training as proof of fulfillment of the professional requirements for funding, including the relevant certificates and proof of performance
• a statement by the supervisor and one other university lecturer on your qualifications and on the significance and timetable of the project
• your written statement that the project is not already supported in any other way by public authorities or with public funds
• Information on any employment relationships, annual income in 2021, including that of spouses or partners, and dependent children.

Through its activities, the YEHUDI MENUHIN Live Music Now Weimar organisation conveys Lord Menuhin's fundamental conviction that music is also therapy. The aim is to bring music "live" to people who are unable to attend concerts due to their circumstances, physical disabilities or lack of opportunities, for example in hospitals, hospices, centres for the disabled or prisons. This is linked to the promotion of excellent young musicians who are about to embark on a professional career. They are given the opportunity to practise the art of performing and to find access to the special needs of their audience.

Ability to moderate and present the programme
Ability to involve and inspire the audience
Flexibility in the programme design
Willingness to form new ensembles with other Live Music Now musicians

Not a member of another LMN organisation
16 to 30 years old (singers up to 33 years old)
Residence should be in central Germany

Scholarship benefit
For their performances, the artists receive a grant financed by donations. Benefit concerts, the proceeds of which are intended to finance further LMN concerts, are excluded.

Duration of the sponsorship
The sponsorship by YEHUDI MENUHIN Live Music Now Weimar is initially valid for 5 years. The probationary period ends after one year or the 2nd performance. The sponsorship ends when the age limit is reached (30 years of age for instrumentalists/ 33 years of age for singers), upon completion of studies, upon taking up a permanent professional position or upon moving away or changing the place of study or residence to Weimar/ Thuringia.

ERASMUS is an education project of the European Union with the aim to support the international student and academic exchange. It has, among other things, the task of arranging a 3 to 12-month period of study in a foreign country.

For study abroad up to two terms at a partner university with ERASMUS one has to apply to the International Office by the 31 January for the following academic year.

The PROMOS programme of the DAAD supports different visits abroad:

• studies, between 1 and 6 months
• internships, between 6 weeks and 6 months
• language courses, between 3 weeks and 6 months
• specialist courses (master classes/summer courses) up to 6 weeks
• study visits, including competitions and concert tours (at least 5 students); up to 12 days

Objective

In order to increase the number of female post-doctoral students and professors at universities, the Free State of Thuringia has launched the Thuringian Program for the Promotion of Young Women Scientists and Artists, which is initially limited until December 2025. All scholarships have currently been awarded.

Within the framework of this program, the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar invites applications for scholarships to support women in their scientific or artistic qualification in the post-doctoral phase or after completion of an artistic degree anchored in the 3rd cycle (such as concert exams) and to enable them to further qualify and obtain employment requirements for a scientific or artistic professorship.

Call for applications

• up to 2 scholarships for young female scientists and young female artists
• Funding amount 2,000 € per month (full-time scholarship)
• Duration 12 to24 months (depending on the funding project applied for)
• Start of funding October 
   

The scholarship holders are accompanied by a mentor from the university during their scientific or artistic work.

Funding requirements

Female academics and artists with above-average qualifications who have completed their doctorate or concert exam no more than four years before submitting their application and who would like to achieve additional academic or artistic achievements in order to meet the hiring requirements for a university professorship are eligible for funding.

Child-rearing periods are taken into account; the period between the doctorate/concert exam and the application is extended accordingly.

The subject of the grant is a concrete project that can be successfully completed within a period of 12 to 24 months. It must  

• be scientifically related to the existing research priorities of the university and enrich them in a sustainable and original way.  
• in the artistic field, lead to further qualification, especially in the pedagogical field, and/or make a special contribution to the development of the arts (e.g. networking of artistic education and practice, interdisciplinary performance project).

The scholarship holder will be integrated into the university. She will be enabled to teach at least two SWS in the scientific field or at least four SWS in the artistic field in order to gain teaching experience in the university context. She can participate in qualification offers of the university.

The scholarship can only be granted if the applicant is not supported by other public funds or by institutions financed with public funds and is not in regular employment for more than 10 hours per week.

The application (in German) must be submitted in writing. The following application documents must be submitted:

• Curriculum vitae
• Proof of a successfully completed doctorate or concert exam or comparable degree
• a comprehensible and coherent concept for a scientific or artistic project, including in particular statements on innovation, feasibility, excellence and relevance with regard to the qualification sought
• Proof of above-average scientific or artistic achievements and, if applicable, pedagogical achievements and successes by means of at least two meaningful written expert opinions or recommendations

Selection procedure

The decision on the awarding of the scholarships is made in a two-stage procedure:

• Pre-selection of the applicants on the basis of the written applications.
• Invitation of the selected applicants to a personal introduction, presentation of the project and interview with the awarding committee (up to 60 minutes)
• Applicants for an artistic or pedagogical scholarship may additionally be asked to complete an audition and a short teaching sample upon invitation.
   

Approval

The granting of a scholarship takes place in writing on the basis of the decision of the awarding commission, which is composed of the university management, scientific and artistic professors and employees and the equal opportunity commissioner.
