Success Times Two for Viola Alumnus: Florian Richter becomes Solo Violist of the Staatskapelle Dresden and Professor for Viola in Nuremberg
He studied viola under Prof. Erich Wolfgang Krüger and Prof. Ditte Leser at the Weimar Music University, and now he is following in his teacher’s footsteps: Florian Richter was appointed professor for viola at the Music University in Nuremberg beginning with the 2017/18 semester. And as if that weren’t enough of a transition, Richter will also be changing orchestras. From 2010 until 2012 he was solo violist of the Staatskapelle Weimar, then beginning in 2012 of the Staatsorchester Stuttgart – and now the 31-year-old will become the solo violist of the Saxe Staatskapelle Dresden under the baton of the honorary doctor of music at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, Christian Thielemann.
„I am looking forward to my new duties,” exclaims Florian Richter, who has just returned from his first tour with the Dresden Staatskapelle through Germany, Austria and Italy. “I was already involved in projects as a regular substitute from 2006 until 2010, so I was able to experience the special sound of the string section. That is why I am happy to become part of this orchestra and play under the direction of Christian Thielemann.” Richter remarked on the professorship in Nuremberg: “I had already built up my own class as a teacher at the Musikgymnasium Belvedere. That also motivated me to apply in Nuremberg and transfer my pedagogical experiences to university level. Now I look forward to both of these new positions.”
Florian Richter was born in Oschatz (Saxony) in 1985 and obtained his first violin lessons at the University of Music and Theatre “Felix Mendelsssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig from Prof. Klaus Hertel. In 2000 he changed to viola, and joined the viola class of Prof. Erich Wolfgang Krüger at the Musikgymnasium Schloss Belvedere Weimar in 2002. The multiple first prize-winner on the national level of “Jugend musiziert” subsequently studied at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT in Weimar with Prof. Erich Wolfgang Krüger and Prof. Ditte Leser from 2004 until 2009. From 2012 until 2014 he completed his studies in Weimar with the “Konzertexamen”, the highest possible artistic degree.
Florian Richter received important musical impulses at chamber music and viola masterclasses taught by Alfred Lipka, Dietmar Hallmann, Hartmut Rohde and Norbert Brainin, among others. He played as a soloist with orchestras conducted by Marek Janowski, Helmuth Rilling, Johannes Klumpp, Stefan Solyom and Michael Sanderling. Even before he had completed his final examinations, he was chosen as the first solo violist of the Staatskapelle Weimar. Beginning in September 2012, he held the same position in Stuttgart. Finally, Florian Richter was a dedicated teacher at the Musikgymnasium Schloss Belvedere in Weimar, giving lessons to the next generation of violists.
